A major finding in the Nigeria research, was the strength of many people's belief in the link between climate change and the will of God. We spoke to Ben Fisher, of the British Council's Kano office for more on the story.
He explained how many Nigerians had made the link between climate and faith.
As a follow up to the research, a series of discussions were organised with politicians, business and community leaders and members of the public to explore how the theme could be developed.
A meeting between the Commissioner of the Environment for Kano state and the renowned Islamic scholar Abdul Kadir U Isma'il led to the commission of a booklet on Islam and climate change. This in turn brought the issue to the attention of the Sultan of Sokoto, the spiritual leader of Nigeria's 70 million muslims.
The team in Kano have now been talking to the Sultan of Sokoto and other religious leaders about how faith-based communication about climate change can help people adapt to a changing environment.
Ben also told us how he hopes that plans for a new waste management project in Kano will help tackle some of the local impacts of climate change. He is keen to see how a faith approach to climate change communication might work in Nigeria.
